Colton to hold drive-up graduation
Colton High School's class of 2020 will have an innovative end to their high school years.
Per the COVID-19 pandemic directives, Colton High School shuttered its doors on March 16. Prom, senior day and the commencement ceremony in the gymnasium were canceled for the class.
But now, the staff of Colton High School has a plan. There will be a CHS class of 2020 graduation ceremony on the high school football field on Saturday, June 6, with all graduates and families staying in cars parked at the field.
The staff of Colton High School stated in an email: "After receiving feedback and considering the governor's guidance, we have determined that this (should) work out well. Graduates will wear caps/gowns/cords/medals; vehicles may be decorated; one vehicle per graduate. The vehicle must be a passenger vehicle. Please contact CHS if you have questions about vehicle type.
"All people in attendance need to remain in their vehicle," the email continued. "No one may be in an open space/bed of a pick-up truck or similar. There will be a podium set up in the football stadium so everyone from their cars will be able to hear and see the ceremony. Staff will direct presenters and graduates along with their parents/guardians when the time comes.
"There will be a photographer there to take pictures of graduates receiving their diplomas. When the graduate's name is announced, they can come forward with their parents or guardians to receive their diploma and get their picture taken. Diploma presentations at CHS will be live-streamed on the internet and recorded for posting at a later time."
The commencement program also will include speeches by the valedictorians and salutatorian, an address to the class of 2020 by a selected staff member, and Tim Behrens, chair of the district's board of directors.
Four Colton High School seniors, Sadie Martell, Madison Olsen, Olivia Spitzer, Courtney Weinberger have been named valedictorians for the class of 2020, and Kolby Benthin has been named salutatorian.
The traditional evening Senior Night of Excellence has been canceled. The district staff will record a virtual Senior Night of Excellence to share with the families of the graduating class.
