Even though many schools around Oregon are announcing a virtual start to the school year, there are some schools returning in-person and some school districts holding on-campus instruction for the younger grades.

Plus, those doing schoolwork from home will still need supplies.

That's where TCC, a wireless phone retailer, stepped in to help. On Sunday, July 26, the company gave away more than 140,000 backpacks at locations around the nation, bringing the longtime event total to more than 1 million backpacks given.

In Molalla, TCC distributed about 90 backpacks, according to employee Nick Spickelmier, who helped out that day. He said the recipients showed their thanks.

"It was super, super good to hear the positive feedback from customers and also being able to help people — you know, seeing their faces light up as we gave them their backpacks," Spickelmier said. "Because of the coronavirus, a lot of people told us that times are tough right now, and backpacks and school supplies are actually really expensive. So they really, really appreciate all we've been doing for them."

Spickelmier has worked at the store for just four months and already is impressed with the company's generosity. Molalla's TCC holds a charitable initiative like the backpack giveaway four times a year through its Culture of Good movement.

"It's honestly a really good thing that we're just, in general, giving back to the community," Spickelmier said. "You don't see a lot of, not necessarily just cell phone carriers, but a lot of companies giving back."

The Molalla TCC store is located in the Molalla Market Center at 1585 W. Main St. and can be reached at 503-759-6004.
