Several of the big oak trees on the property came down on the property and the schoolhouse over the weekend

The weekend ice storm that hit Canby and the surrounding area has dealt a devastating blow to the Mark Prairie Schoolhouse and grounds.

Several of the historic oak trees on the property were uprooted and, unfortunately, a couple of the trees fell on the roof of the schoolhouse, causing extensive damage to the structure.

As of Friday morning, crews had removed the fallen trees from the schoolhouse and were putting a large blue tarp over the substantial hole in the roof as preparations for repair and reconstruction were underway. The insurance adjuster was also expected to arrive Friday for an inspection.

Members of the Mark Prairie Historical Society will have an update on what they are dealing with on their website: markprairiehistoricalsociety.org.

The board of MPHS has been working on the situation since it began.
