880 people receive their first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 on March 31

A total of 880 people received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at a clinic held at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby on March 31.

The combination drive-thru and walk-up clinic was one of several vaccination clinics Clackamas County began hosting last month for residents who met the eligibility requirements and signed up for an appointment through their website.

Volunteers from the Oregon State University Extension Service helped guide a steady stream of cars and pedestrians through the process. Shots were administered through car windows or in tents set up on the fairgrounds. Being outside in the sunny, 70-degree temperatures and the relief of getting the vaccine seemed to put most participants in a good spirits.

"I think everything is running very smoothly here and people are just really happy to finally be getting the vaccine," said Gustavo Corona, one of the event volunteers who received his vaccine as part of his service.

Volunteers helped support the county and Safeway/Albertsons staff with parking, traffic management, check-in and monitoring patients after they received their shot.

"OSU Extension is here to support our community in times of crisis and during events like this," said Leah Sundquist, liaison for the OSU Extension office Clackamas County. "We have two to three thousand volunteers between our Family and Community Health, Forestry, Gardening and 4-H programs that are more than willing to help when the community needs us."
