Silverton man accused of shooting, wounding son
Police arrested a 72-year-old Silverton man after a local hospital alerted authorities about a 37-year-old patient with multiple gunshot wounds.
The hospital called police deputies at about 7:23 p.m. Friday, April 2, to tell them family members had brought the wounded patient to the hospital, according to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Police said the patient's injuries were not life-threatening.
Deputies learned the shooting occurred at a rural property on Bridge Creek Road S.E. near Silverton. Sheriff's Office detectives were then called in to lead the investigation.
Detectives determined the shooting took place during a disturbance involving the victim and his father. Deputies visited the Bridge Creek Road property, where the victim's father, Willie Madewell, surrendered peacefully.
He was taken to the Marion County Jail and lodged there on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon.
Madewell was arraigned Monday, April 5. Bail was set at $500,000, according to court records, and Madewell was ordered to have no contact with the victim, his son, while he is held in custody at the jail. The court appointed Kimberly Davis as Madewell's attorney.
Madewell is scheduled to be indicted April 14.
