Letters to the editor for the Dec. 8, 2021 edition - Drazan's repeated walkouts, ending the filibuster

Does Drazan have maturity to be governor?

To the editor:

Rep. Christine Drazan (R-Canby) has announced her bid for Oregon governor. Good. The current GOP field is weak and uninspiring. Drazan adds both strengths and weaknesses to the table.

Her strengths are common sense and moderation. She hasn't been subsumed with Trump mania. I applaud her. But I am opposing Rep. Drazan for one simple reason -- walkouts.

The Herald-Pioneer.

Rep. Drazan has a bad habit of fleeing to Idaho when things don't go well for her in the legislature. She has supported past walkouts. It takes maturity to recognize you don't have the votes and move on. It shows immaturity to take your ball and run home, when you don't get your way.

What happens when the Democrats in the legislature pass a bill not to Gov. Drazan's liking? Will she do the hard work of negotiation? Or will she flee like a desperado in the night? I fear the latter.

Senators must pass Freedom to Vote Act, end filibusters

To the editor:

I have been a teacher for 18 years, a caregiver 13 years, and lived in Molalla for 13 years. The proposed Oregon Congressional District map has split this community in two and prevents us from having our voices heard.

The Herald-Pioneer.

We need federal reform to ensure we have fair maps nationwide. The Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will end gerrymandering and ensure fair, transparent and non-partisan maps.

Our senators need to deliver this Freedom to Vote Act to the American people, and to do this they need to remove permanently the John Crow filibuster, which is blocking the progress of this highly popular and urgently needed legislation.

The current filibuster took root during the Jim Crow era, when racist southern senators used it to delay passage of important Civil Rights legislation.

Our senators must do everything in their power to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, including the burial of the filibuster, to realize fair maps for all.
