What are the real threats to our democracy?
To the editor
When I hear about threats to democracy, I wonder what country is being referred to? In a democracy, our votes would matter.
We voted to gain transparency into campaign financing sources, and we got a watered-down implementation that excludes large groups of donors. We voted for the reinstatement of the death penalty. The governor declined to implement it.
Judges and juries have decided sentencing for criminals only to be commuted while there is a system of appeals to address these cases. Is justice served without bias? How about for the poor and the underrepresented?
Criminal behavior and contempt can be perpetuated if you have the money to contest the charges. If you are poor, good luck, you will need it. We have a country governed by the wealthy, a plutocracy. The big threat to establishing a democracy are the people who are entrusted with making it so.
Pastor who led rally needs to check the Covid stats
To the editorPastor Lew Wootan of the Rivers Church, who led the "Let Freedom March III" rally, should be reminded that Oregon's public health measures have kept us at number 49 of all states in Covid cases per capita - only Maine has a lower rate.Warren ChristmanMolalla
