After three months of the position being vacant, Molalla High School has hired Jeff Bennett as its new boys' basketball head coach. PHOTO COURTESY OF MOLALLA RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT - Jeff Bennett has been chosen to lead the Molalla boys' basketball program.

Bennett was selected on Oct. 5 among a pool of 13 applicants, and athletic director Todd Moore said Bennett stood out because of his preparedness and experience.

"Coach Bennett came prepared for the interview with a folder with areas that he wanted to highlight, such as his philosophy on offense, defense, practice, developing payers, game preparation, working with the youth program, communication, and partnering with parents," Moore said.

Bennett previously served as assistant varsity/junior varsity boys' basketball coach at the 6A Beaverton High School from 2007 to 2012 before being chosen to lead the program in 2012. He served as head coach for two years where he went 26-21 and reached the Class 6A playoffs in both of his seasons as head coach. For the last two years, Bennett has served as an assistant varsity/junior varsity coach at the 6A Sprague High School in Salem.

"We are very excited to have someone as qualified and experienced as Jeff to fill this role here at MHS," Moore said. "His references referred to Jeff as someone who [has] 'insightful passion,' 'knows the game,' competitive spirit,' and 'infectious energy.' He was also referred to as someone who is a 'hard worker' that 'cares about kids' and that he will 'get the most out of his kids in a positive way.'"

In addition to coaching, Moore said Bennett has spent a considerable amount of time over the past decade working at basketball summer camps.

"He is a strong believer in developing and working with the youth program," Moore said. "In addition to experience, we were also looking for someone that had a plan to incorporate the youth because they are the future of our programs."

Bennett is currently employed in the Salem-Keizer School District, where he and his wife, Stephanie, live with their three boys. Bennett is in the process of earning his credentials to teach Physical Education.
