2018 Spring Sports Previews: Molalla golf
Head coach: Boys – Pat Tindall, fourth season; Girls – Jennifer Reese, fourth season
Key departures: Andrew Daniels and Del DeAngelis
Key returners: Boys - Ben Daniels, Michael Kemp, Chase Jazdinski; Girls – Emma Nelzen
Season outlook: The Indians have 12 boys and eight girls out for golf so far this season, though only a few of them have varsity experience. Emma Nelzen is the most experienced female golfer on the team, and will be searching for a solid finish at districts this season. Ben Daniels and Michael Kemp are the boys' top players, as they are the only two that have played at districts before.
"We are young; we have only been practicing for a week, really just kind of knocking the rust off," Tindall said. "This year, we had a lot of people working or spread out distance wise, so our offseason preparation was pretty minimal. Michael Kemp got to play in at least one pro-am tournament, which should really benefit him. At least three of our new players got lessons from PGA-certified pros, so that will help as well."
Tindall said he has concerns over some scheduling complications, which arose after two teams from the league said they would not be fielding teams this year. That means two less matches right off the bat. There is also a conflict between the matches hosted by two of their league teams, which will result in another missed match, Tindall said.
"We have put out inquiries, but so far we still have a couple empty weeks in our schedule," he said. "That puts us at a real disadvantage as far as getting ready for districts and state."
First meet: The boys will open the season at home at Arrowhead Golf Course on Tuesday, April 3, with play beginning at noon. The girls will open their season at the Quail Valley Golf Club in Banks on Wednesday, April 4.
