With gutsy performances in quarterfinals, both singles and doubles representatives advance

After battling their way through the quarterfinals of the district meet, the three athletes have qualified for the state meet to be held on May 17-18 at Oregon State University, with times and seeding to be determined. First though are the semifinals and finals on Thursday, May 9.

Kendrup (singles) and Simpson & Elia (doubles) have consistently been successful for Molalla, leading the team to the second best record in the Special District 2.

Kendrupd, Molalla's No. 2 single at the district meet, upset the No. 4 seed, Woodburn's Johnathan Swenson. After losing the first set 6-3, Kendrup adjusted to his opponents strong forehand and forced a tiebreaker after being tied 6-6, which he won 7-5. After a brief respite, Kendrup won the third and final set 7-5.

"It was such a battle, and he never gave up," Molalla boys' tennis coach Laurel Roses said.

For Simpson and Elia, the duo had a rough start in the quarterfinals. Against Philomath's doubles team. After dropping the first set, they utilized a line judge to help gauge outs called and wound up winning the second and third sets convincingly.
