After returning to 2A/1A classification, Lady Vikings go on tear into the postseason

PMG FILE PHOTO: TANNER RUSS - Colton's softball squad once again advances to the postseason.
Colton's softball team was not necessarily down and out at the 3A level last year, but the team finished its season with a two game skid and an unceremonious ousting from the first round of the playoffs by 3A state finalist Rainier. The teams' bats managed just 145 runs, and gave up 217.

Now down at the 2A/1A level, the Lady Vikings have new life under their wings. Colton's offense has put a grand total of 290 runs on the board, and given up just 141. The last six regular season games, including a rematch with defending 3A state champion Dayton, have seen six victories. Colton outscored its opponents 118-19 in that time.

In the Special District 2 (SD2), Colton sits firmly in the third spot with an 11-5 league record, and an overall record of 16-9, and is once again firmly eyeing a postseason run.

This year's first round opponents will be the Lost River Raiders (17-8), a team that calls Special District 5 (SD5) its home. Hailing from the deep south of Oregon, Lost River has had a similar trend in fortune with a 10-4 league record, and 17-8 overall. While the offense may not have been as potent as Colton's (with just 237 runs scored), the Raiders defense is pretty tight with just 135 runs allowed. It was that strong play that led Lost River into SD5's No. 2 spot.

Colton will travel to Lost River on Monday, May 20 after the Pioneer goes to press to determine who will make it to the second round of playoffs against Grant Union/Prairie City (21-2) on Wednesday, May 22.
