Molalla scored its first goal of the season.

But the Indians are still looking for their first win after falling to Oregon Episcopal 3-1 last Thursday.

After the Aardvarks scored to take a 1-0 lead late in the first half, Molalla freshman Antuan Peterson got the Indians on the board midway through the second half on a header into the net off an assist by Alex Rojas.

"We worked the ball really well there," Molalla coach Ryan Gates said. "We started playing to feet and finding the open players, playing faster, and that led to the goal. We stepped up. We matched them and scored and then we didn't match them after that. It's something to learn from."

OES took the lead back with 13 minutes remaining in the game and then added a third goal with only 20 seconds left to play.

"We need to talk more," Gates said. "We just need to play together. The more we play the better we'll be, and they're a very good team."

The Aardvarks finished second in 3A/2A/1A last season, losing to Catlin Gabel in the state championship game.

Molalla lost to Catlin Gabel 6-0 on Friday, Sept. 6.

"We play a tough schedule," Gates said. I schedule hard in the preseason so then you've seen it all."

The Indians are back in action Saturday, Sept. 21 at home against Phoenix.

"It's about learning and getting experience," Gates said. "We have a young team, only three returning starters. It's about being in positions we haven't been in before in varsity. It's finding the connections and playing as a team."
