Molalla boys place second at district swim meet
Six Molalla athletes will compete at the OSAA Class 4A-1A Swimming Championships this weekend at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
Senior Linden MacKenzie, the only Molalla swimmer to qualify last year, is returning after placing second in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle in 24.22 and 54.78 seconds at the Special District 2 meet last Saturday at the Molalla Aquatic Center.
MacKenzie will swim in four events at Tualatin Hills after Molalla's 200 medley and 200 free relays also qualified for state.
At the district meet, MacKenzie, Zachary Ferrell, Jordan Cown and Adam Miller finished third in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.49.
MacKenzie, Cowan, Ferrell and Taryn Monaghan placed third in the 200 free relay in 1:40.31.
Cowan also qualified for state in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke, placing fourth at the district meet in both events in 57.90 and 1:01.97.
Ferrell will also swim the 100 breaststroke at state after finishing second in the event at the district meet in 1:08.17.
Molalla's boys finished second in the district team standings behind only La Grande.
Molalla's girls placed fourth, finishing just one point behind third-place Baker.
Lucia Martin Garcia, an exchange student from Spain, was the only Molalla girl to qualify for state, after finishing fourth in the 100 fly in 1:03.49 at the district meet.
"The team did amazing," Molalla coach Melissa Georgesen said. "Lots of personal bests. Kids swam through illness and injury to represent their team."
