Molalla girls soccer opens with win
The Molalla High girls soccer team got its season off to a successful start on Sept. 1 with a back-and-forth win over Cascade by a 3-2 score.
Molalla got two goals in the first half, the first by junior Paulina Beteran and the second coming from sophomore Raegen Frankus. The Cougars came back in the second half, however, getting a breakaway goal to make it 2-1, then converting a penalty kick to tie things up a 2-all.
Fortunately, the Indians were able to battle back from losing the momentum of a 2-0 lead and got the game-winner off the foot of sophomore Kelsee Smith late in the contest.
"The first preseason game is in the books, and it was well-played and much improved from just last week," coach Nina Wegner said. "The final score was 3-2, but it wasn't even close on the field."
The Indians put 26 shots up during the match, many of them on goal.
"Lots of good hard work," Wegner continued. "Now to more fitness and working on little parts and pieces."
Molalla is back in action next on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Catlin Gabel. Match time is 3 p.m.
