Colton girls notch two wins to start season
The Colton High girls basketball team is off to a 2-0 start on the young season, snagging back-to-back wins over Vernonia and Taft on Dec. 1 and 2, respectively.
The Vikings picked up their non-league wins courtesy of a 30-21 verdict over Vernonia and a 40-36 count over Taft.
"In both these games we got early leads and maintained it throughout," head coach Valerie Wakefield said.
Against Vernonia, Olivia Haines led the charge with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Izzy English added nine points and was a tornado on the defensive end with six steals.
"I was proud of our defense in this game," Wakefield said. "We notched 15 steals in all and turned Vernonia over 11 times in the first quarter."
A day later against Taft, Wakefield noted the well-balanced offensive the Vikings delivered.
Haines again led the way with 11 points, but was backed up by Dani Terry with 10, English with 7 and Hailee Hordichok with seven points.
A busy week awaits the Vikings with a Monday visit from Western Christian in a league encounter. Then, two more non-leaguers with visits from Mohawk (Dec. 8) and Portland Adventist (Dec. 11) on the slate.
