Sheriff coordinates involvement of numerous agencies

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Emergency personnel assess the 'injuries' to one of the 26 Madras High School students who portrayed injured inmates for the disaster drill.Last Thursday, a plane crashed into the Jefferson County Jail, and law enforcement and emergency service providers went, well, to school.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins has long wanted to hold a “fire drill” of sorts, to allow for a variety of county agencies to prepare for a huge, multi-layered, multi-victim tragedy. On Thursday afternoon, that drill took place.

Agencies taking part in the drill included the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Madras Police Department, Madras Municipal Airport, Deer Ridge Correctional Institution, Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services, Jefferson County Fire Department, Warm Springs fire, police and ambulance and St. Charles Madras. All, in cooperation, practiced their preparedness to be better ready in case of similar tragedy occurred.

The “victims” of the crash were primarily high school volunteers.

Adkins said the drill proved very valuable and the agencies involved appreciated being involved.
