In honor of Arbor Day

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Becky Burchell, of the Madras Urban Forestry Commission, left, and Joe McHaney, director of the Kids Club, supervise kids planting trees along a segment of the Willow Creek Trail on April 26, for Arbor Day. The kids helped plant 10 trees near the base of the trail across Highway 361 from the Madras Bike and Skate Park. The Madras Urban Forestry Commission enlisted the help of the Kids Club to celebrate Arbor Day April 26, with the planting of trees along the Willow Creek Trail.

Supervised and assisted by commission members and the city's Public Works Department, the kids planted fall gold ash, autumn mountain ash and flowering cherry trees near the southern entrance to the segment of trail that winds up the "M" hill on the west side of Madras.

The Public Works Department had already installed irrigation and planted another eight autumn blaze maple and ponderosa pine trees.

As part of the day's events, winners of the Arbor Day poster contest were presented with birdhouses built by UFC members Bill Donaghu and Rob Osborn. Miller Lumber donated the wood for the birdhouses.

First-place winners included: Breann Heckathorn, kindergarten; Idaly Romero, first grade; Vanessa Young, second/third grade; and Miriam Vasquez, fourth/fifth grade.

The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs donated ponderosa pine saplings for each of the Kids Club participants.
