The Pioneer received three awards in the Oregon/Southwest Washington Society of Professional Journalists Nondaily Newspaper Contest, which were presented May 18, in Portland.

The Pioneer competed against all other nondaily newspapers in Oregon and Southwest Washington with circulations of less than 8,000.

General editor Susan Matheny received second place in the General Feature category for her article “Hoofing it across America with a goat,” about Christian rock star Steve Wescott’s trek with his goat LeeRoy.

News editor Holly Gill won two third-place awards. The first was in the Investigative News category for her piece “Fire safety issues cause concern,” about safety problems of an apartment/office building on Fourth Street.

The second award was in the Social Issues category for her article “Driver’s license key issue,” about the Latino community’s meeting with Rep. John Huffman over the issue of illegal residents obtaining driver’s licenses.
