Purchases Nana's Bakery

Dancing Beans Southside Cafe owner John Williams displays some of his fresh-baked cinnamon rolls.Dancing Beans Southside Café doubled its space in May with the purchase of Nana’s Sugar-Free Bakery next door.

Owners John and Audrey Williams have knocked out a wall and expanded into the former bakery area and now have an extra 800 square feet of space.

“She told me she was quitting and I was in the position where I didn’t want to lose the opportunity to do my own breads and bakery items. Plus, I didn’t know if someone else would take over who would be competition,” John Williams explained.

With the expansion, he also gained the bakery’s full commercial kitchen, whereas he had been using a Crockpot and hotplate before for soups and sandwiches.

Although he still makes some sugar-free bakery items, Williams said the regular bakery goods have been popular.

“I’ve been selling a lot of cookies and cinnamon rolls, and I’ve got the hamburger buns, sandwich rolls and biscuits down, but I’m still working on the sliced bread,” Williams said, adding, “I’ve cooked a lot, but baking is a learning curve.

The extra space is also giving Dancing Beans room to add an ice cream cooler from Eberhard’s Dairy. “We will do hard ice cream waffle cones, sundaes, and espresso shakes,” he said.

With more business, they have added two employees, and if things go well this summer, they will add a couple more. Customer seating space has doubled and there is also outside seating on the patio.

Hours have also expanded, and the café is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The menu features breakfast burritos, waffles and egg dishes in the morning, and for lunch, sandwiches ranging from $4.95 to $5.75 including, hamburgers, Reubens, barbecued pork, and Philly cheese steak sandwiches, plus homemade soups. There is also a full coffee and espresso menu.

Dancing Beans Southside Café is located at 910 S.W. Highway 97, in the South Y Complex, and the business phone is 541-460-5094. The Williamses also own the Dancing Beans drive-through espresso stand in the Les Schwab parking lot.
