West streets (finally) get asphalt

by: TONY AHERN - Paving on the west side of Madras got under way Monday, when High Desert Aggregate and Paving laid asphalt on a three-block stretch of Second Street, from J to M Street, west of U.S. Highway 97. The city expects paving to continue this week on Third Street, from J to K Street, and L Street, from Highway 97 to Second Street. On the east side of the highway, I Street will be paved from the highway to Ebert Street. The city of Madras is in the midst of an ambitious paving schedule this summer, with substantial improvements under way on the southwest side of town.

After city crews prepared the roads for paving last week, on Monday, High Desert Aggregate and Paving paved a three-block section of Second Street from J to M Street, in the area behind the South Y Complex.

Weather permitting, Rod Fulton, road supervisor for the city, expected that L Street, previously a gravel road, would be paved Wednesday, from U.S. Highway 97 to Second Street, to connect with the earlier project, and Third Street, from J to K Street would also be paved.

Just east of Fifth Street, beside the dental office of Dr. Wayne Schultz, Fulton said they would probably be paving I Street, from Highway 97 to Ebert Street, this week, as well.

When paving is completed in those areas, they will turn their attention to paving and storm improvements on Southeast E Street, from Southeast Grizzly Road to Southeast Kinkade Road, currently a gravel road.

The city is investing $150,000 in road improvements for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

For the upcoming fiscal year, the city will spend about $400,000 in the industrial park, including a full reconstruction of Northwest Hess and Northwest Canal streets, and an asphalt overlay of Northwest Mill Street. That work is expected to take place later this summer.
