Meet set for Jan. 13 on school plans

"We have met with folks from the Bend school district, Madras school district and Redmond school district to find out how each of them went about hiring a project manager, and talked about what's going to work for us," said Superintendent Stefanie Garber.

So far, the plan is to hire a project manager first, but even that has options, she said: "Go with a contractor, hire a person as our own employee, or contract with one of the larger districts and use their project manager."

Garber will take those three options to the Culver School Board on Monday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m., in the Culver High School Library.

"Whatever they decide, the next step will be to put out the request for proposal for an architect," she continued. "Those two folks, along with key stakeholders will organize a district-type committee — and it would have students, parents, community members, and staff — to give input on the changes."

Garber expects the district to sell bonds for the project in February, and hire the project manager and architect by the end of the month.

"I'm still very mindful that 49 percent weren't in favor of this," she said. "I just hope that we'll have a public process, so everyone has the opportunity for input."

If she "pushes hard," Garber believes that the district can break ground on the project in late August.

"It all depends on the project manager," she said. "We may be able to do demolition over the summer. We will have temporary, portable classrooms for the next school year."

The project, which includes demolition and replacement of two elementary school wings, improved energy systems, and renovation of other district facilities, is expected to be completed by December 2015.
