Would your nonprofit group or organization like to help out when Cycle Oregon comes to Madras in September, and maybe make some money in doing so?

An information meeting on Cycle Oregon, and fundraising programs that could be connected to the event, will be held Wedneday, April 30, at the Madras Aquatic Center, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is holding the meeting and leading local Cycle Oregon organizational efforts.

Cycle Oregon, the biannual cycling event that showcases different areas in Oregon, will be in Madras Sept. 10 through 12. An expected 2,200 cyclists will be in town for the event.

Cycle Oregon will provide about $24,000 to local entities to pay for services provided during the three-day/two-night layover over in Madras.  The services needed include food serving, baggage handling, hospitality/welcoming, site preparations and clean-up crews.  There will be many duties, including manning route rest stops and lunch coordination on the day participants ride into Madras; the local ride on Thursday from Madras to Smith Rocks via Metolius and Culver; and when the cyclists depart Madras headed to Shaniko.

This event will require approximately eight to 12 coordinators overseeing various groups of volunteers involved with 30 separate areas of activities.

The April 30 meeting will include information on Cycle Oregon program with a focus on determining groups for coordinators to contact to organize plans for the specific responsibilities. The target is to solidify commitments in May.  Only nonprofits are eligible to receive funding for services.

If planning on attending the meeting, contact the chamber in person or by phone, at 541-475-2350.

"This exclusive event will be a boon for our communities and organizations while we showcase our area, our outdoor recreations, particularly our cycling opportunities and our quality of life," said Chamber Director Joe Krenowicz.
