A Culver driver was injured and a 9-month-old baby in the vehicle died when the driver turned into the path of a truck.

HOLLY M. GILL - A Ford Escape car and large Carlson Sign Co. truck collided near the intersection of U.S. Highway 97 and the Culver Highway on Friday, June 30. The driver of the Ford Escape was injured, and a 9-month-old baby died at the scene.
An infant died and a Culver man was injured in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 97 last Friday.

According to Oregon State Police, on June 30, at 4:55 p.m., OSP and emergency personnel from Jefferson County responded to a motor vehicle collision on U.S. 97, near milepost 105, at the junction with the Culver Highway. Preliminary investigation revealed that a white 2012 Ford Escape, operated by Brandon Payne, 23, of Culver, was traveling northbound on U.S. 97, near the Culver Highway junction. Payne attempted to turn left onto the Culver Highway and turned into the path of a southbound white 2015 Ford F750 truck.

The Ford F750, operated by Douglas Dean Jr., 41, of Redmond, attempted to avoid the Ford Escape, but struck it on the passenger side. The Ford Escape came to rest on its side. The 9-month-old infant passenger in the Ford Escape, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene after lifesaving measures were performed by medical personnel. Payne was transported by air ambulance to St. Charles Redmond. Dean was not injured in the collision. The report said safety restraints were utilized in the vehicles, but alcohol was determined to be a contributing factor in the accident. OSP was assisted by Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Fire Department, LifeFlight, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
