Rumors that a Tennessee-based variety store was looking at a location in Culver became more than just rumors on Friday, when the city received site plan review documents for a Dollar General store.
According to the documents submitted by Gary Johnson, project manager for Archicon Architecture and Interiors, of Phoenix, Arizona, the company is seeking to build the store on a 1.38-acre site partitioned from a 10.63-acre site just west of the Culver Veterans Memorial Park, near the corner of Southwest First Avenue and East D Street.
The proposed 9,100-square-foot building will be set back from the highway (Southwest First Avenue), facing west, with parking on both the north and west sides of the store, with access from First Avenue.
Permission for the partition was granted in January by the property owner, Gerald M. Bieze, of GMB Investors, of Lake Oswego.
The new Dollar General store will be located directly across First Avenue from The Store. The Dollar General Corp. has about 14,000 stores, including 19 in Western Oregon, the closest of which are located in Estacada, Mill City and Sweet Home.
The retail chain, which sells groceries, beauty products, household goods and other items, is considered a rural chain. In Oregon, most stores are located in small communities. Some of those communities — such as Port Orford, Merrill and Drain — are even smaller than Culver.
