Potential railroad crossing closure on agenda
The potential closure of the Elm Lane railroad crossing and changes to the Fir Lane crossing will be the topic of a June 6 evening meeting of the Jefferson County Commission.
During the meeting, to be held at 6 p.m., in the County Annex at 66 SE D St., the commission hopes to hear from neighboring property owners who might be impacted by the proposals.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe has offered to signalize the Fir Lane crossing, with crossing lights and gates, if the county agrees to close the crossing. Neither crossing is currently signalized.
Under the Elm Lane closure proposal, BNSF would add lights and gates to Fir Lane at no cost to the county; contribute $287,534 to pave Collins Drive from Elm Lane to Dogwood Lane, and improve a driveway approach for a homeowner on Collins Drive.
BNSF would also extend a parallel siding track — which currently goes from north of Fir Lane almost to Elm Lane — to a termination point near Dogwood Lane.
The county will take comments at the meeting, by email [email protected] co.jefferson.or.us, or by mail to Jefferson County, 66 SE D St., Madras, OR 97741.
