Dollar General plans Madras store
Just two weeks after submitting an application to locate a Dollar General store in Culver, the same company has also submitted an application to locate a store on the south end of Madras.
Representing the Tennessee-based variety store, project manager Gary Johnson, of Archicon Architecture and Interiors, of Phoenix, Arizona, is seeking to build a 9,100-square-foot building on a 1.33-acre lot, subdivided from a 2.77-acre lot, owned by Parr Lumber Co.
The lot, situated on the east side of U.S. Highway 97, just north of Brush Lane and across the highway from Aaron's Sales and Lease, is zoned for corridor commercial development.
On May 18, Johnson submitted an application to the city of Culver to locate an identical 9,100-square-foot store on a 1.38-acre site partitioned from a 10.63-acre site just west of the Culver Veterans Memorial Park, near the corner of Southwest First Avenue and East D Street.
That proposed building will be set back from the highway (Southwest First Avenue), facing west, with parking on both the north and west sides of the store, with access from First Avenue.
Permission for the partition was granted in January by the property owner, Gerald M. Bieze, of GMB Investors, of Lake Oswego.
The new Dollar General store will be located directly across First Avenue from The Store. The Dollar General Corp. has about 14,000 stores, including 19 in Western Oregon, the closest of which are located in Estacada, Mill City and Sweet Home.
The retail chain, which sells groceries, beauty products, household goods and other items, is considered a rural chain. In Oregon, most stores are located in small communities. Some of those communities — such as Port Orford, Merrill and Drain — are even smaller than Culver.
