Board member, students report on Japan trip
Madras High School students Osmar Rodriguez Piza, Jessica Gienger, Tyreyk Ramsey and Wynona Tewee, gave a presentation of their trip to Madras' Sister City of Tomi City, Japan, at the July 23 meeting of the School District 509-J Board of Directors.
The students were accompanied by board member Jamie Hurd, who was their chaperone. Each student talked about what a wonderful cultural experience the trip was, and Hurd said they would like to promote the exchanges, so more students would apply to go. The expense of the trip is covered through fundraising.
New board officers were elected. Courtney Snead is the new board chairman, and Stan Sullivan the new vice chairman.
Snead reported on the Promise Scholarship Program the district is applying for. The board selected a half-program, which includes workshops, by the Oregon School Boards Association. She said the program would bring money back to the district, and workshops cover professional learning communities and Advanced Via Individual Determination methods. (Promise Scholarships provide financial aid for students to attend community college).
Under personnel, new hires included, for Warm Springs K-8, classroom teachers Judy Harris, Sandra Basse, Julie Hamilton, Bonnie Vaughan, Katie Cleaveland and Alyssa Jones (behavior). For Jefferson County Middle School, Virginia Cole, math For MHS, Kathleen Glogau, science. For Bridges high School, Caleb Gayman, alternative education. For Madras Elementary, Rebecca Alvarado was hired for kindergarten.
The board and superintendent are conducting an entire review, updating and rewriting of 509-J policies, which, when completed, will be put online for easier public viewing. The first section of updated policies were approved.
The board approved a contract for BestCare Treatment Services to provide mental health services for the School-Based Health Center, located at MHS.
The board is now meeting only once a month (except for September, October and April). The next meeting is 7 p.m., Aug. 20, at the district office.
