Gateway man dies in rollover accident
A Gateway man, Robert William McRee, 64, died last week in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Northeast Clark Drive.
According to Undersheriff Marc Heckathorn, of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, emergency responders were dispatched to the crash, located north of Dogwood Lane, around 4:43 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
McRee, who was southbound on Northeast Clark Drive, headed toward Madras from Gateway in a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle, left the road and rolled over into a field.
"A witness observed the vehicle operating at a high rate of speed prior to the crash happening," Heckathorn noted. "The car went off the roadway and flipped into an empty field. The driver, who did not appear to be wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle."
Upon arrival, deputies began administering CPR, until paramedics from Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services arrived. McRee was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We didn't reconstruct the accident so no speed data is available and we didn't request any alcohol tests to be conducted since it was a single-vehicle, one-person accident; alcohol or other impairments are unknown," said Heckathorn. "Speed was believed to be a contributing factor based on a witness who observed the vehicle being operated just outside of Gateway a few miles prior to the crash scene."
The sheriff's office was assisted by JCEMS, and the Jefferson County Fire Department.
