Madras, MRC seek new budget committee members
The city of Madras and the Madras Redevelopment Commission are looking for community members to participate on their respective budget committees.
Anyone interested in serving on either of the committees is asked to submit a "letter of interest" by Friday, Jan. 18, to the City Finance Department, Attn: Kristal Hughes, Finance Director, 125 SW E St., Madras, Oregon 97741. Specify which committee you are interested in serving on.
The Madras City Council will make appointments to the Madras Budget Committee at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and the Madras Redevelopment Commission will make its appointments at its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
To serve a three-year term on either budget committee, interested persons must be registered voters and attend the budget committee's meetings, which generally consist of two evening meetings (in March and April for the Madras Budget Committee) and special meetings when the need arises. There is no compensation for either committee.
Madras Budget Committee members must live within the Madras city limits, while members of the MRC Budget Committee must live within the Madras Urban Renewal District, which is defined as the Madras community area consisting of two miles from the city limits, excluding Metolius.
Both the Madras Budget Committee and MRC Budget Committee consist of the members of the local governing body and an equal number of citizens at large.
At least one meeting is held to receive the budget message and budget document and to hear from the public. When each of the budget committees is satisfied with the proposed budget, including any additions to or deletions from the one prepared by the budget officer, it is approved; however, by law, the governing body may make changes in the approved budget.
Interested citizens are encouraged to apply. If you have questions, contact the Madras Finance Department at 541-475-2344.
