Supporters of public education to join in after-school rally in support of students, education.

On May 8, across Oregon, supporters of public education are coming together for a "Day of Action."

The events look different in each community. In Jefferson County schools, staff, administrators and education associations are coming together for an after-school rally. Families are invited to join staff members, stakeholders, and community members throughout the district for an afternoon of solidarity in support of education.

The rally is to show support for students and schools. In order to provide quality education, the supporters would like to see smaller class sizes; increased health and safety services, such as counseling and nursing staff; more learning time; more available classes and elective choices; and expanded enrichment programs.

On Wednesday, May 8, supporters will gather for the Madras March for Students at 3:30 p.m. at Sahalee Park. The rally begins at 3:45 p.m., and at 4 p.m., the group will march through downtown Madras to McDonald's and back to the park. The event will conclude at 5 p.m.

The May 8 event is timed to coincide with the Oregon Education Association "Day of Action" to protest "the state's failure to provide adequate and stable funding for K-12 education."

Several districts are planning teacher walkouts, but in Jefferson County, teachers and staff have instead decided to keep schools open to ensure students can receive the safe learning environments they deserve and limit the financial strain on families and local businesses.

The public is invited to join in the rally, and to wear red in support of local students and school staff on May 8.
