Stayton man turned into path of Culver residents on Highway 22, near Stayton.

SUBMITTED PHOTO - A passenger in a large sedan died, and a Culver man, who was a passenger in a Chevrolet Suburban, was seriously injured in a crash on Highway 22, near Stayton.A Culver man, Robert Dethman, 52, was seriously injured and a Stayton woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident Oct. 19, on Highway 22 East, near Stayton.

Oregon State Police is continuing the investigation into the accident, which occurred at about 5:35 p.m. Saturday. OSP troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 22E at Fern Ridge Road Southeast.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Mercury Marquis, operated by Mark Higley, 88, of Stayton, was traveling westbound on Highway 22E attempting to turn westbound onto Fern Ridge Road. A Chevrolet Suburban, operated by Windy Dethman, 49, of Culver, was traveling eastbound on Highway 22E. Higley turned directly into the path of the oncoming Suburban and was struck nearly head-on.

A passenger in Higley's vehicle, Ella Higley, 86, of Stayton, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mark Higley was not injured.

Passengers in the Suburban included Robert Dethman, who suffered serious injuries, Neoma Miller, 33, also of Culver, and four children. Driver Windy Dethman, Miller and the children were not injured.

Highway 22E was closed for four hours following the crash. OSP was assisted by the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Transportation and Stayton Fire and Medics.
