The second phase of the Canyon East Apartment complex, located north of Jefferson Street, and east of U.S. Highway 97, got underway this week, after officials broke ground last week.
The new development, called Red Canyon Apartments, will be built just east of the first phase — farmworker housing — which was completed in 2011. Estimated cost for the project is $2,436,000.
"This Red Canyon development has two sites, with 67 units in Redmond and 23 in Madras," said Keith Wooden, director of real estate and facilities for Housing Works.
The new development, located on a 1.27-acre parcel, will provide affordable, multi-family housing, which is open to anyone who meets the income tests to qualify.
"The majority of the units will have an income test of 60% of area median income with some of the units at 30% AMI," said Wooden. "These units are not restricted to farmworkers like the neighboring property Canyon East."
"The development will be financed primarily with 4% Low Income Housing Tax Credits and a LIFT (Local Innovation and Fast Track) loan that was awarded to the project earlier this year," he said. "Both of these sources of financing come from our state's housing finance agency, Oregon Housing and Community Services."
Both the Madras and Prineville apartment complexes were started this month, and are expected to be completed in about 10 months, potentially in July.
R&H Construction is the general contractor for the project, and Pinnacle Architecture, the architect. The site will include amenities, such as community rooms, fire pits, fitness trails, playgrounds, covered entries and decks, storage and parking.
