Madras police to watch crosswalks
Watch out for trick-or-treaters! The Madras Police Department will be out in force to conduct a pedestrian safety operation Thursday, Oct. 31, in Madras.
The police department reminds all drivers that Oregon recognizes every intersection — whether it is marked or unmarked — as a crosswalk. Under Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS 801.220), a crosswalk is defined as "any portion of a roadway at an intersection or elsewhere that is distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the surface of the roadway that conform in design to the standards established for crosswalks."
With families out on the streets and sidewalks on Halloween, the police department would like to take the opportunity to advise drivers to take extra care, and pedestrians to always use caution when crossing the roadway.
Grants from Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation are used to fund officer wages during the safety operations.
