509-J and Jefferson County employees get training on best practices 'due to recent fiscal issues in the community.'

A total of 72 people learned about best practices for handling cash and maintaining records at the Madras Performing Arts Center.A total of 72 people registered for and participated in special training last week on handling cash and maintaining records, according to Brandie McNamee, finance and treasurer for Jefferson County.

Jefferson County and the 509-J School District joined forces with Public Treasury Institute, a nationally recognized training course, on best practices and policies in the area of cashiering.

McNamee pointed out that about half of participants were employees of 509-J School District, and the other half were Jefferson County employees and fiscal officers for local districts and nonprofits.

"Due to the recent fiscal issues in the community," she said, "we want to make it a priority to get everyone handling funds (both cash and non-cash transactions) trained on best practices."

The event included representatives from the Madras Aquatic Center Recreation District, Jefferson County Fire District, Jefferson County Library, city of Culver, and Culver schools.

"We appreciate Jefferson County and 509-J School District's efforts in offering this special training for cashiers and supervisors, as it focuses on the important role of cashiers, their ability to provide the best service to citizens, use of best practices in cash and noncash transactions to avoid loss, and insure that public entities adhere to sound internal controls, of importance to us all," said Stacey Dussault, president of Public Treasury Institute of North America.

The course, based on PTI's book on best practices and policies in cashiering, was presented by Laurie Steele, the Marion County treasurer. Steele addressed the rapidly changing practices and technologies in the field and covered practical cashiering skills, recognizing counterfeit currency, and PCI compliance rules.

"The training demonstrates Jefferson County and 509-J School District's commitment to take fiduciary responsibility at every level of their organization while offering current and sound educational opportunities to public officials and their employees," said Dussault.
