Governor's office approved application after initial review; phase 1 regulations will be in place

Jefferson County Board of Commissioners President Kelly Simmelink was all smiles as he announced that the county was approved to begin the first phase of reopening Friday, May 15.

"At 1:19, I received a phone call from Gov. Brown. You're open. Thank you to her for reaching out to us," Simmelink said via Facebook Live.

"As of tomorrow, May 15, you are officially open," he said.

Public Health Director Michael Baker thanked the commissioners and partners in Warm Springs.

"We will continue to monitor COVID cases," he said, adding that guidelines will be coming out to help keep the coronavirus from spreading.

The announcement came a few hours after an initial announcement from Brown that the county's application to reopen was under review.

This morning, the state approved applications from 28 counties, including Crook and Deschutes, and rejected two.

"We'll have more information for you later," Simmelink said. "Just keep a lookout. ... Be safe, everybody."
