Ready to move some (Covid weight) mountains?
Even COVID-19 cannot stop the decade-old Jefferson County tradition of the Movin' Mountains Slimdown Challenge.
The countywide contest to lose weight and maybe change lifestyles is happening again in 2021, with some alterations from the past due to safety protocols driven by the pandemic.
Weigh-ins for participants will be next week, Thursday through Saturday, at the Jefferson County Public Health building, located at 715 SW Fourth St., in Madras. The final weigh-in at the contest end is June 19.
Movin' Mountains 2021 — again organized and carried out by the Jefferson County Public Health Department — will entail a competition of reducing weight, fat mass and body mass index figure. Historically, the contest has entailed weight loss and waist measurement reduction.
"We are running this challenge a little differently this year with safety in mind," said Jonathon Courtney, who is heading up the program for the department. Courtney is the department's healthy community and tobacco prevention coordinator.
"Physical measurements will not be taken this year as we are trying to avoid physical contact with individuals as much as humanly possible. However, we are using the TANITA scale print-out with Weight, Fat Mass, and Body Mass Index reductions to determine the winners."
Courtney said this contest is a perfect way to "lose the pandemic 15 (pounds)."
There will be both individual and team competitions. The team competitions feature mens, womens and mixed (one man, one woman) categories. The cost to participate is $25 per category. It will cost $50 to participate both as a team member and as an individual. Participants are limited to two categories.
All entrance fees are returned to the participants as cash prizes to the winners.
The contest is open to anyone 18 years or older who lives or works in Jefferson County or on the Warm Springs Reservation. This is the 11th consecutive year of the Movin' Mountains program.
Also, all contestants who lose at least 5% of their weight will receive a prize.
Registration and initial weigh-ins will be Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) building, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; then again on Friday, Feb. 26 at the JCPH building from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and a third day of signups will be on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., also at the JCPH building.
All entree fees must be received by Saturday, Feb. 27. In special cases, a different day may be arranged for weighing, but entry fees must be received by the Feb. 27 date.
