Pet shop owner remodels former hair salon
If you've driven south through Madras recently, you've probably noticed the new red dog house on I Street.
The bright yellow place that for 35 years was home to Sunny's Hair Salon is getting a makeover and becoming a larger than normal dog house.
Creatures Pet Shop owner Michal Smith moved her thriving pet food and supply business from downtown Madras to the spot along the main drag. She opened in the new location, next to Jefferson County Public Health, on March 16.
Smith first opened Creatures Pet Shop next to the physical therapy clinic on Southwest Fifth Street in 2017 when she was new to the community.
"It was not something the community had had before, from what we understand," she said of her small animal pet supply store. "After three-and-a-half years, the community had been so good at supporting our business, it grew and grew so much so that it was clear that we needed a parking lot."
Parking had become a problem not only for her customers but for supply trucks.
"The increased business was really driving the decision to find someplace with parking," Smith said. "The new location had been for sale for quite a while, and it, thankfully, was still for sale when we started looking."
She purchased the building and began converting a decade's old hair salon into a dog house.
"To go with Sunny's Hair Salon, it was a bright yellow for many, many, many years, and now it is a nice pretty red color," Smith said. "We have plans for the future to further develop the outside to make it more like a dog house than it does currently."
Adding to the dog house theme, two large, yellow dog bones serve as the Creatures Pet Shop signs. Smith, with the help of her partner, has also made a few changes on the inside, but the most noticeable impact is on the outside of the building.
Creatures Pet Shop will continue to offer healthy pet food, treats and supplies for dogs, cats, fish, birds, small animals and reptiles.
"What's been very clear from day one is that reptile supplies are critical for folks wanting to stay in the area and shop, so we offer crickets and Dubia roaches and those kinds of things for the reptile folks out there," Smith said.
She keeps live fish, birds and occasionally other small animals in stock as well.
Since the first of the year, however, the pet shop no longer offers grooming services. After two-and-a-half years, the groomer, Desiree Pierce, moved out and started her own business, Stinker Tinker Salon.
But, Creatures Pet Shop still offers the U-Wash service. For 10 bucks per dog, dog owners have their own space to wash their pets. Smith has all the necessary shampoos, blowers, towels and tools.
"I'm so happy to be in this new location! Not only does it provide much needed parking, but it will also allow for further expansion in the future. I couldn't have picked a better spot," Smith said.
