 - A NASA-sponsored balloon filling up with helium at the Madras Municipal Airport. The balloon is scheduled to be released Wednesday morning and go up 120,000 feet.

On Wednesday, April 14, a NASA-sponsored flight will take place from the Madras Airport.

At about 7:30 a.m., a large helium-filled balloon will take flight carrying an object over 120,000 feet into the edge of our atmosphere and will perform a high altitude drop test.

The test is to simulate the space station being able to drop an item from space and have it land safely and accurately on the surface of the earth. This test flight will travel across the tri-county area and will attempt to safely drop and land the payload in a controlled location east of Mitchell.

JCSO Undersheriff Marc Heckathorn said, "It was very cool to meet with some of the team members today in preparation for the flight. Many people will notice this huge balloon and item being carried below. Please don't worry and just take a minute and watch in awe for a moment."
