VFW sponsors essay contest and teacher recognition
Madras VFW Post 12141 announces the 2021-2022 Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Scholarship competitions.
The essay competitions are dedicated to encouraging a better understanding and appreciation of the United States and fostering patriotism among the nation's youth.
The Voice of Democracy is open to all high school students. They are asked to prepare an original essay. This year's theme is "America: Where Do We Go From Here."
Students must make a three-to-five-minute audio recording of their essay. The recordings will be judged, and the first and second place winners will receive $500 and $200 respectively from the Madras VFW Post. They will also be eligible for additional wards through regional, state and national levels.
The Patriot's Pen competition is open to students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The students are asked to write a 300-to-400-word essay. This year's theme is "How Can I Be a Good American."
The essays will be judged, and the first and second place winners will receive $200 and $100 respectively from the Madras VFW Post. They will also be eligible for additional awards through regional, state and national levels.
The VFW also sponsors a Teacher Recognition Program to recognize elementary, middle school and high school educators who stimulate interest in America's history, civic responsibility and patriotism. Nominees are eligible for awards at the local, regional, state and national levels. Anyone can nominate a teacher for this honor.
Entries are due to Madras Post by Oct. 31.
