Michael and Shawna Boynton share their treasured collections at their new Main Street Vintage boutique

 - Shawna Boynton has collected vintage items since she was a child. She and her husband, Michael, recently opened Main Street Vintage in Culver, featuring their collection of antiques and home décor.

Shawna Boynton loves to collect things, and she welcomes fellow treasure hunters to explore her antique and home décor collection in her new shop, Main Street Vintage, in Culver.

"I love to share my treasures with other people, and I really encourage people to come and see what we have," Boynton says. "It's not like anything else in town."

Looking for a wagon wheel, rusty tin canister or wooden crate? How about a bureau, oil can or adding machine? Main Street Vintage can hook you up.

With encouragement from her husband, Michael, Boynton purchased the 5,000-square-foot space on First Avenue from Ike Abbas in February. It includes two suites with a connecting walkway. After closing the antique shop many years ago, Abbas used the north section as a storage space for his antiques. The south suite was headquarters for an online selling business.

The Boyntons, with occasional help from their four kids, went to work sorting through Abbas' floor-to-ceiling collection. They kept many of his items in the north side of their shop – the antique part – to be sold on consignment and added some of their own.

The south side is what Boynton calls the boutique. This side includes more of their own antique collection as well as their refurbished furniture, home goods and décor and some new items that she has gotten wholesale.

"I love everything – I love stuff," Boynton giggles. "I'm a collector."

She gathers antiques, furniture and treasures from estate sales and picks up collectibles here and there. She has tucked them away for years, saving them for the day she could fulfill her dream of having her own boutique.

"I've never attached to anything that I buy – I just buy it because I like it," Boynton said. "This was a great opportunity to put it somewhere."

They cleared out their sheds and hauled things from their property on the outskirts of south Madras to the downtown Culver shop. After much organizing, sifting, sorting and decorating, the Boyntons had a soft opening Saturday, April 17. They are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

 - Michael and Shawna Boynton converted an antique storage unit into a vintage shop organized by theme. It took them a couple of months to come up with the name Main Street Vintage.

"We wanted something to show that it's on the main street, and we like the old country feel and the old town feel," she said, adding that their logo features a wagon wheel with flowers.

They will continue to organize the antique part of the store by themes. There are areas featuring farm equipment, vehicle parts, buggy equipment, doctor supplies, logging and railroad items. Other sections include post office supplies, laundry and sewing notions, and children's toys and furnishings. There's also a man cave, barber and beautician tools, and farmhouse kitchenware. Boynton is also working on a '50s diner display.

The boutique side of the shop has a cheerful living and dining room feel, with paintings, pillows, tables, linens and dishes. It features some of her restored furnishings, and Boynton adds her decorator's touch to the displays, giving shoppers ideas on how to use unique furnishings.

This side also offers a project corner, with items priced cheap for quick sales.

"I find pieces that I don't necessarily have time to restore but still could be loved," she said. "They're all things that could be restored."

The Boyntons also build furniture and plan to eventually add their own brand of furniture and home décor to their shop. But for right now, they are enjoying sharing their collection with fellow treasure hunters.

"We're a one-of-a kind for our county," Boynton said. "I really want people to see what I have in my collections and be able to share it with people."
