The memorial at the Jefferson County Community Center supports the mental health of veterans

The Veteran Healing Memorial Dedication is planned for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27. The memorial is located on the grounds of the Jefferson County Community Center, 860 SW Madison St. in Madras.

VFW Post 12141 will be dedicating the Veteran Healing Memorial. Organizers wanted the ceremony to be on a patriotic day, so they chose July 27, the day the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed in 1953.

Since breaking ground, local veteran Shawn Stanfill has tirelessly worked to bring this dream to fruition. The purpose of the memorial is to support the mental health of veterans and their families. The memorial includes a U.S. flag and flags of all branches of the military as well as benches and a fire pit.

"We encourage the community to come out to thank our veterans and receive information to help them or other family members," said Jefferson County Community Center Director Louise Muir, who helped oversee the project.

Hot dogs and soft drinks will be served during the event.

The public is welcome to attend the dedication and recognize the service of veterans and those who are currently serving.

The memorial will be open to the public for memorial services or family gatherings. To schedule an event at the site, contact Louise Muir at the Community Center.

"We hope the memorial is a place for anyone in healing of traumatic events in their lives," Muir said.
