Three others sent to hospital with injuries, highway closed for more than five hours

PAT KRUIS/MADRAS PIONEER - A head-on collision on Highway 97 just south of Iris Lane killed on and injured three others. The incident closed Highway 97 for more than five hours, diverting all Highway 97 traffic north and south bound through Culver.

A motor vehicle accident happened about 12:45 Thursday afternoon, July 29 on Highway 97 about a half mile south of Iris Lane.

Oregon State Police say preliminary investigations show a Chevrolet Impala operated by Charles Carroll, 51, of Madras, was northbound when he lost control and entered the southbound lane, colliding with a Mazda CX-5.

Carroll's passenger, Donna Reynaga, 52, of Ontario, California, died at the scene.

Carroll was transported to the hospital by air ambulance.

The driver of the Mazda, Greg Rockwell, 70, and his passenger, Colleen Donahue, 62, of Bothell, Washington, both suffered injuries.

Jefferson County EMS took Rockwell and Donahue to the hospital.

Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 also responded to the accident.

The Jefferson County Sheriff and Oregon Department of Transportation rerouted all Highway 97 traffic north and southbound through Culver until about 6 p.m. Thursday night.
