The U.S. Army Golden Knights and B-17 Bombers headline the 20th anniversary show

 - The Golden Knights are one of only three Department of Defense-sanctioned aerial demonstration teams. The team will jump both night and day Friday and Saturday during the 20th Anniversary Airshow of the Cascades, Aug. 27-28.

The 20th Anniversary Airshow of the Cascades will take to the skies Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28 at the Madras Airport.

The pandemic grounded the annual show in 2020, but organizers are primed to make up for it this year.

"This annual summer event brings family, friends, youth and honored veterans together to enjoy aerobatics, planes, cars, food, drinks and music all wrapped together located outdoors for all to enjoy," said Airshow President Joe Krenowicz. "This is more than an airshow, it is a festival."

The U.S. Army Golden Knights headline this year's show. The world's top military parachute team will perform both days with a 12-person team that performs for the President of the United States, Super Bowls and around the world.

"A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, anywhere in the world, will be happening at this year's airshow," Krenowicz said. "There will be two flying B-17 Flying Fortress Bombers in the air and on static display in one place, during one airshow right here in Madras, Oregon."

Airshow partner Erickson Aircraft Collection will have their B-17, Ye Olde Pub, along with a visiting B-17 Sentimental Journey, showcasing one the most recognized military aircraft of World War II. The Flying Fortresses are two of less than 10 remaining flying in the world.

Aerobatic pilots Renny Price, Jerod Flohr and Jim Bourke will perform as well as Undaunted Airshows pilots. Visitors can take airplane, glider and helicopter rides. There's a car show, fly-in show, food booths, vendors and fireworks.

Party band Precious Byrd will get folks dancing Friday evening with their fresh renditions of modern and classic hits and high-energy originals. Bend high-energy band Sweet Red and The Hot Rod Billies will entertain Saturday with their Rock-A-Billy sounds.

General admission is free for veterans and children 5 and younger. All tickets, including reserve parking, car show and RV overnight registrations, are available online. All admissions include access to the Erickson Aircraft Collection. Campers with RVs, trailers and tents can stay up to three nights in the General RV site.

The Airshow of the Cascades has volunteer and sponsorship opportunities. Volunteers receive a free general admission pass, a "Ground Crew" shirt and snacks.

Krenowicz is excited that late-summer events can occur, and organizers are taking precautions for COVID-19.

"Being an outdoor venue, we are still recognizing the challenges of the last year and will have sanitizing accommodations across the airshow site," he said. "We feel people are aware of continued sanitation practices and are respectful of others' comfort level wearing masks, bumping elbows and distancing concerns."

The airshow has grown from a small fly-in event at the Och's ranch in Willowdale to what it is today at the Madras Airport.

"It's a great way to showcase our community, enhance our local tourism economy, and attract future business upstarts or relocation of existing business firms," Krenowicz said.

The airshow is one of only a couple of dozen premier events in Oregon.

"There are only a few rural municipal airports where an airshow of this magnitude can be produced with predictable weather and the only location having the backdrop of the Cascade Mountain range," Krenowicz pointed out. "With the Erickson Aircraft Collection, the largest private collection of World War II aircraft in the U.S., it is fitting we promote such a destination attraction."
