Decision clears the way for Juniper Crossing west of Love's Travel Stop in Madras

PLANS COURTESY CREATIVE NORTHWEST LLC - The Madras City Council approved a zone change that allows a developer to build an RV park west of Love's Travel Stop. Plans for Juniper Crossing include long-term RV sites, cabins, yurts and eventually cottage homes and RV storage.

The Madras City Council cleared away some red tape that prevented a developer from building a recreational vehicle park on the 22-acre lot west of Love's Travel Stop.

The area is currently zoned for mixed-use employment, which currently includes uses like day-care facilities, drive-thru businesses, restaurants, general offices, medical facilities, hotel/motel establishments, recreation and fitness, retail sales, private schools, repair shops, but not RVs.

The proposal asked to add RV park to the definition.

The original code allowed RVs, or "temporary living quarters for recreational or vacation purposes," only in Corridor Commercial zones.

The proposal argued changing the code will allow RV parks in more places. "Having a wider variety of temporary lodging options will directly and positively impact the recreational needs of the city's visitors."

In their Aug. 24 meeting, council members approved changing the zoning to allow RV parks at that location and in other mixed-use employment zones.

Plans for the park, Juniper Crossing, call for an 8.3-acre RV park with 55 hookups and a camping area with 14 yurts and 21 cabins.

Eventually, Juniper Crossing will include 64 cottages, 15 of the cottages will be rental units, the other 49 will be privately owned urban cottages.

The expanded plans also include storage for 92 RVs.
