Madras Cinema plans to soon offer alcohol
Madras Cinema 5 hopes to serve up wine, beer and cider by the end of the year.
Tuesday, Aug. 24, the Madras City Council approved a liquor license request for the theater.
"Once we get our liquor license, we'd like to expand our food options," says company spokesperson LeAnn Nakvasil. She says they'll likely serve pizza and specialty hot dogs. "And we like to support some of the local breweries and wineries."
In addition to Madras Cinema 5, Nakvasil's father-in-law, Charles Nakvasil, owns three other theaters in communities surrounding the Portland area.
Nakvasil says liquor sales have improved business at those theaters.
"It brings more people in," says Nakvasil. "It's a way to enhance the experience. Most people can sit at home and stream online, and they can drink wine or beer."
She says liquor sales did not turn away families. "We saw an uptick of people coming in, Mom and Dad bringing the kids."
The company still needs to jump through hoops, such as training and signage, for the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission.
Manager Nate Westcott says details haven't been worked out yet, about how they'll configure liquor sales at the concession stand. He will be in charge of training employees to serve alcohol.
Nakvasil hopes to bring in the new beverages and new menu at Madras Cinema 5 before the holidays.
