Registration is open through Oct. 4 for the Saturday, Oct. 16 Cowdeo rodeo for kids

The Jefferson County Fair Board and Cowdeo Committee are bringing back the fun-filled, family-friendly rodeo for kids. No experience is necessary, and events are open for kids from 5 to 14. Show day is Saturday, Oct. 16 starting at 10 a.m. at the fairgrounds.

Returning this year are PeeWee Sheep Riding for 5- and 6-year-olds. PeeWee Goat Tail Undecorating, PeeWee Barrel Racing, PeeWee Calf Riding, and PeeWee Horseless Roping for 6- to 8-year-olds. Junior Horseless Calf Roping, Junior Breakaway Roping, Junior Barrels and Junior Calf Riding for 9- to 11-year-olds. Senior Barrel Racing, Senior Breakaway Roping, Senior Cow Riding and Senior Scurry Race for kids 12 to 14.

Kids 5 and under also can participate in the stick horse race and the critter scramble.

The Cowdeo gives kids an opportunity to compete in each event for a buckle, and the competitor with the most points can win the all-around saddle.

"This is such a fun event for participants and spectators alike," says Fairgrounds Coordinator Brian Crow, "plus, it has been a tradition in our community for 52 years. Originally, it was coordinated by St. Patrick Catholic Church, and the fair board took over some years ago."

Entry fees are $7 per event for competitors, and spectators pay $5 at the door. This year, the 4-H kitchen will be open for food, and there will be a snack shack as well as a coffee vendor.

To include your child in the event, simply go to http://cowdeo.com before Oct. 4 and fill out the online form.

Cowdeo is presented by Gary Gruner Chevrolet, Indian Head Casino, Signet Realty, Sureline Broadband and Mid-Oregon Credit Union.
