Welcome sign plowed through again
A vehicle damaged the Welcome to Madras sign at the south Y in Madras recently, and Madras Police Chief Tanner Stanfill said it is a criminal case.
The incident occurred at 10:18 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26. The suspect, Taylor Arthur Jr., 21, was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan, Stanfill reported. Arthur was issued a citation in lieu of custody for assault in the third degree, reckless driving, and reckless endangering of another person.
City workers hauled off the wooden part of the structure Monday morning.
Madras Public Works Director Jeff Hurd said the city is assessing the damage to see what is salvageable or not.
"We're looking at coming up with a sign that matches closer to what we have at the north Y and also looking into placing it in a better position to hopefully avoid it from getting hit again," Hurd said.
This isn't the first time the Welcome to Madras sign has been hit at the south Y. A driver crashed into the sign a few years ago. Hurd said only the wood was damaged that time, and they were able to repair it.
