Halloween festivities begin Friday, Oct. 29 with the Merchant Costume Contest

The Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is planning the annual Merchant Halloween Costume Contest Friday, Oct. 29 to encourage the community to visit the various business contestants between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"This year, we are enhancing the contest to include the Madras downtown businesses that will be hosting Halloween trick-or-treating from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30," said Chamber Director Joe Krenowicz.

Costume judging will be finalized on Saturday, Oct. 30.

"The business community is looking forward to having families visit their locations and are glad to make an event that is fun and safe," Krenowicz said.

The Madras Downtown Association is sponsoring a Halloween party in downtown Madras on Saturday evening, Oct. 30. Children are invited to trick or treat participating downtown businesses from 4 to 6 p.m.

Penelope's Soaps and Such owner Angela Rhodes invites families to Shrek's Castle from 4 to 8 p.m. that evening. Her shop will be decorated like the castle in the "Shrek" movie.

"It's all Shrek themed," Rhodes said, referring to the green ogre and princess story.

Neighboring business Dreams Realty will be decked out like the swamp where Shrek lives, and OK Barbershop will be decorated like Shrek's bar.

The three businesses will have candy, snacks and beverages, including wine and eggnog. Food vendors will be open, and kids can burn off some energy in a bouncy house.

OK Barbershop owner Nick Bowlby has arranged for Trent Beaver to entertain with live music from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Willow Creek Hideaway Alley near the shop, and a duo will play from 9 to 11 p.m.

Rhodes said she wants everybody to get out and have some fun at the downtown Halloween party.

In addition to Madras Halloween events, Metolius City Hall will have a Halloween drive-thru event from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. The community is invited to enjoy a free cookie and a goodie bag from Metolius City Hall, 636 Jefferson Ave. in Metolius.
