Hanson, 23, is a graduate of the University of Oregon, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Archeology in December 2019.

Hanson grew up in a rural community outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. She moved out West to attend college in 2016, and finished with her two degrees in less than four years.

Hanson's longtime boyfriend, Joe Hill, is a first-year science teacher at Madras High School. They also have a Shiba Inu dog named Mei, and a cat named Ditty.

Hanson enjoys hiking, crafting, sewing and photography, including film photography.

Before joining the Pioneer staff, Hanson was working for the Lane County United Way. As a student, she interned with Portland Monthly Magazine.

Hanson will be a general interest reporter at the Pioneer. Hanson was brought on board following the recent departure of Editor Holly Scholz, who moved out of the area.

Pat Kruis, who has been the hard news reporter for the Pioneer for approximately one year, has been promoted to News Editor.

"Kiva has only been with us for a couple days and immediately hit the ground running. She is young but she already has great skills, and a lot of positive energy. We are all very happy to have her on board," said Publisher Tony Ahern.

"I'm real excited to start covering the community as I become a part of it," said Hanson. "Definitely excited about all the photography work."
