Governor declares emergency conflagration to activate statewide resources, multiple evacuations ordered

COURTESY NORTHWEST INTERAGENCY COORDINATION CENTER - Crews form multiple counties are repsondign to the over 10,000 acre fire - Miller Road Fire

Updated as of Aug. 5 at 2 p.m.

A fire broke out near Juniper Flats in Wasco County on the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 2 and quickly spread through grass, sagebrush and juniper to now 11,186 acres as of Aug. 5. The fast-moving fire has caused multiple evacuation orders. The fire is known as both the Dodge and Miller Road fire.

The governor declared the fire an emergency conflagration Tuesday evening, activating resources from across the state to respond to the fire.

"I have invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act to make more state resources available to the fire crews on the front lines in Wasco County at the Miller Road/Dodge Fire," said Governor Kate Brown. "With many fires actively burning across the state and several weeks of peak fire season ahead of us, I am urging all Oregonians to be prepared and do their part to help prevent wildfires - just one spark can light a fire that will quickly spread."

Crews from local agencies are actively working to slow the fire's progress. Dozer lines and hand lines have been established at the southeast corner of the fire. Aircraft has also been deployed to drop retardant on the fire.

This fire is largely wind drive, facing up to 25 mph winds leading to the fast spread. The fire is at 25% containment and has an estimated containment date of Aug. 8.

The Oregon State Fire Marshall took command of the fire Wednesday, and shared that 881 residences are threatened, and one has been destroyed already. The fire is feeding off grass and brush in the area, and no cause if known at this time. 414 firefighters, 36 engines one dozer and eight water tenders are responding.
